Our behalf of our governing body and Teaching School strategic board, we would like to welcome you to the Inclusive Teaching School Alliance (iTSA).

iTSA is led by St. Giles School which is an outstanding primary special school located Derby City. St. Giles was designated a single Teaching School (TS) and National Support School (NSS) by the DfE as part of cohort 12, and leads an alliance of mainstream and special schools across Derby and Nottingham.

Together we are delivering SEND specific training and support linked to the Teaching Schools ‘big 3’:

  • Continuing Professional & Leadership Development (CPLD)
  • Initial Teacher Training (ITT)
  • ITT and school-to-school

In order to add capacity to the leadership of St. Giles School; the schools substantive Headteacher; Clive Lawrence, now takes on the role of Executive Headteacher of both St. Giles School and iTSA. Rob Sherwood as one of St. Giles Deputy Headteacher’s, now takes on the role of the Head of the Teaching School (Director).

iTSA aims to ensure that young people with SEND achieve the best outcomes and are fully included in their educational setting. iTSA works across all phases and sectors of education including primary, secondary, mainstream and special schools, and together we are committed to improving the school system for pupils with SEND.

iTSA is a ‘hub’ of information for school leaders, teachers, support staff, families and organisations who require advice, support and guidance on meeting the needs of young people with SEND

 We are a forward-thinking Teaching School Alliance where pupils with SEND are at the ‘heart’ of all decision-making. A desire to become world class in all areas in ITT, CPLD and StSS; we have a relentless focus on creative, inspirational and inclusive leadership and teaching, which maximises opportunities for pupils with SEND to learn and achieve!

What is a Teaching School (TS)?

Teaching School status gives successful schools a leading role in the training and professional development of teachers, support staff and headteachers, as well as contributing to raising standards through school-to-school support. They are part of the government’s plan to give schools a central role in raising standards by developing a self-improving and sustainable school-led system.

Schools work together within a teaching school alliance – a group of schools and other partners that is supported by the leadership of a teaching school. This includes all those schools that benefit by receiving support, as well as strategic partners that will lead on certain aspects of delivery. Alliances can be cross phase and cross sector, work across local authorities and can include different types of organisations.

Collaboration is at the heart of the teaching school model. Working together, the alliance will deliver support for other schools in their wider network to:

  1. Play a greater role in recruiting and training new entrants to the profession (initial teacher training).
  2. Lead peer-to-peer professional and leadership development (continuing professional development).
  3. Identify and develop leadership potential (succession planning and talent management).
  4. Provide support for other schools.
  5. Designate and broker Specialist Leaders of Education.
  6. Engage in research and development activity.
  7. Throughout all of the above roles, high quality teaching and learning is a core theme

What is a National Support School (NSS)?

National Leaders of Education (NLEs) are outstanding headteachers or principals who, together with the staff in their school (designated national support schools (NSS), use their skills and experience to support schools in challenging circumstances.

In addition to leading their own schools, NLEs work to increase the leadership capacity of other schools to help raise standards. Our Executive Headteacher Clive Lawrence has been designated NLE status by the DfE and St. Giles has been designated a National Support School.
